Stellate Ganglion Blocks Can Help Restore Taste and Smell Following COVID

You would think after surviving a COVID-19 infection it would be time to celebrate, but that’s not always the case if you’re unfortunate enough to experience long-term loss of taste and smell that continues to seriously interfere with your quality of life.

This usually resolves in several months but about 6% go on to have long lasting problems that can continue for years. Memory and concentration difficulties, “brain fog”, can also occur.

Until recently there was no effective treatment, but this has now changed with stellate ganglion nerve block injections.

The stellate ganglion is a collection of nerves in the neck which is injected with local anesthetic. This procedure has been around for nearly a century and pain management doctors such as Drs. Balter and Krejza are trained to safely provide it for a number of painful conditions & PTSD. We can provide sedation, so it is painless.

Now this procedure is being used to restore taste and smell. We’ve witnessed remarkable recovery with this treatment. We can’t guarantee it will work but most gain some meaningful improvement. There are reports it also helps for brain fog.

Insurance does not currently pay for the stellate ganglion block to restore smell and taste because the research hasn’t been completed.

At Midwest Pain Clinics, which is affiliated with Creighton University Medical School, we are conducting this research to persuade insurance companies to pay for this powerful treatment.

We are now offering this treatment at an affordable out of pocket cost.
